Description
Azilsartan Medoxomil Introduction
Azilsartan Medoxomil is a prodrug that is rapidly converted to the active moiety, azilsartan (TAK-536), by ester hydrolysis in the gut and plasma. In vascular smooth muscle and adrenal glands, Azilsartan selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 (angiotensin II type 1) receptor, thereby promoting vasodilation and reducing the effects of aldosterone. It is a potent angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor antagonist that inhibits RAAS with >10,000-fold selectivity over AT2 for the treatment of hypertension.
