Ferrous citrate is used as a nutritional supplement in the food industry and can be used in dairy products.

Ferrous citrate is used to control the phosphorus levels in the blood of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are on dialysis. Ferric citrate is also used to treat iron deficiency anemia in patients with CKD who are not on dialysis.
